Form 80 Military Service: What to Disclose

By FormMate 80  ·  Updated June 2026

In brief

Form 80 includes a section on military or peacekeeping service (Part H / Q25). You must disclose all compulsory and voluntary military service, including service in national police forces or paramilitary organisations. Be specific and complete — vague or incomplete answers can prompt follow-up questions.

What Form 80 Part H asks

Part H / Q25 of Form 80 asks whether you have served in any of the following:

  • Armed forces (including conscription / national service)
  • Peacekeeping forces
  • Police or border security at a national or military level
  • Any paramilitary organisation

If you answer Yes to any of these, you must provide: the name of the organisation, the country, your dates of service, your rank, your role or duties, and whether you were involved in any actions that may have caused harm to others. This section is an important component of the Department's character assessment under the Migration Act.

What service to disclose

You must disclose all of the following, regardless of how long ago the service occurred or how routine it was:

  • All mandatory (conscripted) military service
  • Voluntary military enlistment in any country
  • National service, even if brief
  • Police service, border security, or corrections at a national or military level
  • UN peacekeeping deployments
  • Service in paramilitary or auxiliary forces
  • Reserve service, even part-time

Do not omit service because it was a long time ago, routine, or you believe it to be irrelevant. Omitting service that can be independently verified is far more problematic than declaring it fully.

How to handle classified or sensitive records

Some military service involves classified roles, covert operations, or activities that cannot be discussed in detail. In these cases, list what you can: the organisation, the country, the dates of service, and your role in general terms.

If specific information is classified, note this in Part T and describe your role in general terms without disclosing classified material. Do not fabricate information or omit the service entirely. If you are genuinely uncertain about what can be disclosed, consult a registered migration agent before submitting Form 80.

If you have not served

If you have never served in military, police, peacekeeping, or paramilitary roles, mark the relevant question No. Do not leave it blank. An unanswered question may be treated as incomplete information, which can delay assessment of your application.

Conscription and compulsory national service

Many countries have or have had compulsory national service programs. Examples include South Korea, Israel, Singapore, Switzerland, Greece, Taiwan, and many others. If you have completed national service in any country — even briefly — you must disclose it in Form 80.

Many applicants forget short national service stints, particularly if they occurred many years ago. Before submitting Form 80, cross-check whether the country or countries you have lived in have or had compulsory service requirements that applied to you.

Disclosing involvement in armed conflict

If your service included involvement in armed conflict, complete the relevant questions carefully and accurately. Use Part T to provide brief factual context — the nature of the conflict, your role, and the period involved.

Complex military histories involving conflict zones, irregular forces, or sensitive operations may benefit from advice from a registered migration agent before you complete this section of Form 80.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to disclose completed national service?

Yes. All compulsory national service must be disclosed in Form 80, even if it was brief, many years ago, or you consider it routine.

What if my military records are no longer accessible?

List the service to the best of your knowledge: country, approximate dates, organisation, and role. Note in Part T that records are no longer accessible and provide the best information available.

Does disclosing military service mean my visa will be refused?

Disclosing military service does not automatically affect your application. The Department assesses service history as part of a broader character assessment. Failing to disclose service that can be independently verified is a more significant concern than the service itself.

What is a paramilitary organisation for Form 80 purposes?

A paramilitary organisation is broadly any armed group that operates similarly to military forces but is not part of a regular armed service. If you are unsure whether an organisation you served with qualifies, consult a registered migration agent for specific advice.

Can FormMate 80 advise me on what to disclose about my military service?

No. FormMate 80 is an independent tool that helps you complete and download Form 80. It does not provide legal or migration advice. For guidance on sensitive disclosures, consult a registered migration agent (MARN holder).
